Who is yikes ID?

The founders of yikes ID are veterans of the cycling and running race circuits. We have seen our share of crashes and had the unfortunate pleasure of kissing the ground ourselves so many times our bodies now bare permanent road tattoos. But crashing during competition is one problem. What about the hours spent training? The percentage of potential mishaps that could happen while one is out training, often alone and miles from home, is exponential. Who will identify and speak for you if you can’t? Worse yet, what about those of us who now have children. What if your child is injured, in shock and unable to speak? Who will know how to quickly reach you so you can grant permission for medical care?

We created yikes ID to be your “information 411” link back to your family and loved ones so they can quickly help provide detailed information about you when you need it the most; when you’re injured. Our original concept was to offer protection to cyclists and children ( check the staggering number of results on Google by searching: boy hit by car on his bicycle ). Knowing the fact that getting active children to “put on their sweaters” was tough, getting them to wear identification would be nearly impossible! The first yikes ID styles will be attachable identification that affix to ones helmet, saddle/seat, saddle bag or shoe. This way the ID protection will always with the individual participating in their outdoor activity. Look to yikes ID to continue to bring the athletic community, high quality, fashionable wearable IDs for those who prefer this approach.

yikes ID, is a Los Angeles, California based company. As fellow cyclists and runners, we want to make sure you receive the assistance you need, when you need it. Incorporating a wearable and attachable yikes ID when you and your children participate in outdoor activities is a smart decision for everyone’s safety and peace of mind - for you and your loved ones, because accidents happen!

What information should I include on my yikes ID?

Your yikes ID Shoe, Seat, Wrist, and Aware allow 5 lines of 25 characters each line. We recommend you start with your first and last name on line 1. Put either your city or enter your emergency contact’s phone numbers, SMS, IM, email on line 2 through 4. The last line should be reserved for any special medical conditions you are known to have. We’ve provided an approved list and their respective abbreviations Medical Conditions This will help both the EMT/First Responders and the Emergency Admittance initiate proper care.  If you don't have a known medical condition, either leave the line blank or include another contact number.

Your yikes ID Helmet allow 4 lines of 25 characters per line. We recommend starting with your first and last name on line 1 (note: use only first name if for a child), and your emergency contact’s phone numbers, SMS, IM, email on line 2 and 3. Since two phone numbers can fit on a single line with ample spacing, you could use line 3 or 4 to list any known medical conditions.

What information should I include on my child’s yikes ID?

Keeping your child safe is very important. We recommend only putting your child’s first name on line 1 and at least two emergency contact’s phone numbers on line 2 and 3. The 4th line is optional for yet another contact number or listing your child's medical condition / known allergies.

Won’t my driver’s license do the same as a yikes ID?

No. A driver’s license only indicates where you live, not who to call in case of an emergency. Secondly, athletes who typically carry a driver’s license, have them safely tucked away in their back pockets: not readily accessible to those looking to provide you with emergency care. If you wish to carry your license, we highly recommend augmenting it with a yikes ID so emergency contact’s phone numbers are readily available.

I carry a mobile phone with me during my training sessions, isn’t that good enough?

Absolutely not! We know cyclists who have created Home and ICE (in case of emergency) contacts in their address books. This would be helpful if someone can get to it. But how many of your mobiles lock when in standby mode (not in immediate use)? What if you fall on your mobile, breaking it? When do you believe your emergency care givers will find your mobile if it is in your back pocket? Adding yikes ID to your training sessions is a smart decision and will help augment any limitations of your current options.

I already have a wristband type ID, why do I need yikes ID?

You’ve heard the saying, “better safe than sorry” right? What would happen if you left your house with the intent of putting in some hours and miles when the unexpected happens, you’re injured? If you are diligent and strapped your wrist ID on, you’re potentially covered. But if that was the day you forgot, now what? Augmenting your current option with a yikes ID Helmet and or yikes ID Shoe is the smart decision. Why, because these yikes ID styles are always attached to your helmet, bicycle, or shoe so you’re protected, even if you forgot or elected not to wear your wristband type ID. Secondly, yikes ID Wrist and yikes ID Aware are more comfortable to wear. In fact, the yikes ID Aware is one tag that accomplishes two very important tasks - protecting you while supporting your charity.

Will my yikes ID stainless steel tag fit on other road type identifications?

Not really. Other ID wristbands use a bulky 1” (2.54cm) strap to accommodate a large stainless steel tag. Your yikes ID was designed to be highly visible, yet streamlined. The yikes ID stainless steel height is only 1.6cm (.6299”) yet can contain up to 5 lines of information with each line 25 characters per line. Lastly, your yikes ID is precision laser engraved for superior quality.

Will my yikes ID Wrist stainless steel tag fit on my LIVESTRONG™ Wristband?

The yikes ID Wrist won't but the yikes ID Aware does!  The yikes ID Aware is the only visible identification designed to perfectly fit over a LIVESTRONG, Susan G. Komen or other silicone awareness bracelet. The advantage - you won't have wrist clutter with a watch or GPS, awareness bracelet, and over sized identification bracelet with uncomfortable buckle like those found else where.

Do you offer an Interactive (web based) version of your ID?

No. Our research indicates that although this type of offering would be great for building a recurring revenue business, it’s not the best product for our customers at this time. Why? Two reasons. First, there are strict Privacy Rulings that govern the security and privacy of health data like HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act), as well as International Regulations that prohibit its citizen’s personal health information to reside in databases within the United States. This restriction is due to the U.S. Patriot ACT that gives the U.S. Government access to this information without ones permission. Therefore, in lieu of placing servers in Canada, EU, Africa and Asia, yikes ID has elected not to offer this Interactive service. Secondly, our research indicates that this Interactive version would not be used by EMT/ First Responders whose primary responsibility is to gather your vitals and stabilize you for transport. Nor would Emergency Admittance use it as they’ve indicated they have enough time to call your family and loved ones but are reluctant to access the Internet for your medical records in a timely manner. Therefore we believe it is in your best economic and privacy interest if we not offer an Interactive service but instead focus on providing you and your loved ones with the best wearable and attachable identification styles available in today’s global market.

Who needs a yikes ID?

We think you'll agree, accidents happen!  So who needs a yikes ID?  You, your children and any of your friends or family that participate in outdoor activities like cycling, running, jogging, hiking, skating, boarding and skiing. Did you know that if your child is injured, the parent/legal guardian needs to grant permission so the child can receive medical attention? What about those of you who have ongoing medical conditions, food and drug allergies, or those who are taking medications? Are you not at risk if something happened and you're unable to speak for yourself? Only yikes ID provides a full line of customized personal identification equipment that is both wearable or attachable. Our attachable styles include our yikes ID Helmet and Shoe IDs that are affixed to ones bicycle, helmet, or shoes so they are always with you.

Here are some scary facts:

Bicyclists: accident statistics for California and the United States

  • There are 85 million bicycle riders in the United States.
  • 770 bicyclists died on US roads in 2006, down just 14 from the year before. Over 90 percent died in crashes with motor vehicles. Over 100 bicyclists were killed in California according to CHP.
  • Motorists failing to yield the right-of-way to a bicycle cause 42% of bicycle-related accidents.
  • The "typical" bicyclist killed on U.S. roads is a sober male over 16 not wearing a helmet riding on a major road between intersections in an urban area on a summer evening when hit by a car.
  • About 540,000 bicyclists visit emergency rooms with injuries every year. Of those, about 67,000 have head injuries, and 27,000 have injuries serious enough to be hospitalized.
  • Bicycle crashes and injuries are under-reported, since the majority are not serious enough for emergency room visits. 44,000 cyclists were reported injured in traffic crashes in 2006.
  • Every six hours a bicyclist is fatally injured in the US.

"Yikes! The statistics are alarming yet facts and statistics don’t really mean much to someone until they personally have become one of those statistics. I’ve experienced my share of cycling accidents: hit by a car, numerous race crashes, to a training ride crash that had me within inches of hurdling over a 1,000 foot cliff! If I were alone, who would speak for me if I couldn’t? When I was with fellow cyclists, did they really know who I needed to contact and their phone numbers? Did I have an ID with me at that time? The answers to those questions: no one, no and no! Don’t risk becoming a statistic. Get your yikes ID today and give everyone including yourself, peace of mind.” Bruce Temesy, CEO yikes ID

What makes the yikes ID line of identification different from other forms of wearable identification?

yikes IDs are designed to be lightweight, comfortable, and the thinnest (most streamline) visible emergency identification products available in today's market.  The bottom line, yikes IDs blow away any competitive offering because yikes IDs are highly visible and attach to the equipment you use during your workout so you'll never forget to carry your ID. yikes ID is driving new standards by taking great care to deliver the highest quality, most durable, line of custom personal identification for athletes and children available in today’s market. Your yikes ID Shoe use high quality stainless steel custom tags that are laser engraved for highly legible, superior quality and nearly indestructible images. yikes IDs are “leaner & meaner”. We’ve learned from surveys that other road type identifications are bulky and uncomfortable to wear. Our yikes ID products are highly visible yet streamlined meaning thinner, less obtrusive and use a soft albeit durable nylon webbing for your comfort and protection. Lastly, yikes IDs deliver a better overall economic value.
